We wanted to give everyone an official update from the SPL as it pertains to the coronavirus (COVID-19). It was always our intention to run the event next weekend as planned with extra measures in place to practice safe, social distancing.
We have been monitoring the situation from the beginning. After much thought and at the behest of local officials and teams, we will have to postpone the Florida Cup and potentially reschedule the remainder of the 2020 SPL season until this crisis comes to an end. We feel that instead of cancelling events, we should make every effort to hold a complete series for the players. We vow to work in conjunction with other leagues and event promoters so that we can all hold events without putting them on top of each other. We have several dates in play but without having an end in sight from the crisis, it is futile to announce these dates.
As you have likely heard by now, many state and local governments have mandated enforceable “safer-at-home” orders to encourage people to stay at home. These mandates have been rolling out and will continue to roll out as the days go by.
We’ve heard from many players that are directly affected by what is going on and that are concerned with the possibility of attending the event.
This is a difficult situation as our own Government and medical professionals cannot give us a firm timeline as to when this crisis will come to an end.
We ask for your patience and understanding as we work through the logistics of this delay. There are so many moving parts and pieces and we want to make absolutely certain that they all fit and work smoothly together.
The sooner this is over, the sooner we can all get back to some type of normalcy. Let’s all do our part.
Please stay tuned to our website and social media for any further announcements.
Thank you from everyone at the SPL.
